Sex Workers’ Day – Honoring Dignity, Safety, and Respect

Every year on June 2nd, the world comes together to observe Sex Workers’ Day. A date dedicated to acknowledging the rights, humanity, and dignity of individuals who work in the sex industry. Also known as International Sex Workers’ Day, this day commemorates the ongoing struggle for the recognition and protection of sex workers’ rights. Rights across your city and even the globe.

Originating from a protest in Lyon, France, in 1975, when over 100 sex workers occupied a church. This was to demand better working conditions and protection against violence and police abuse. So this date symbolizes resilience, unity, and the call for justice. Despite the decades that have passed, sex work remains heavily stigmatized in many societies, with workers often facing legal persecution, social exclusion, and physical danger.

Sex Workers’ Day serves as a powerful reminder that sex workers are human beings with rights. Rights to safety, to health, to legal protection, and to live without fear or shame. It’s a day to challenge the prejudice and myths that surround this line of work and to advocate for inclusive policies that support, rather than criminalize, those in the industry.

Celebrating this day means recognizing the diversity within sex work and affirming that every person, regardless of their profession, deserves respect and dignity. It is also a call to action !  A way to governments, organizations, and individuals to listen to sex workers’ voices. Also to support harm-reduction initiatives, and fight for the decriminalization of sex work. A mark as a crucial step toward justice and equality.

As we mark June 2nd, let us reflect on the importance of solidarity and human rights. And as well the shared responsibility to build a world where no one is left behind.
